Columbia Bank program to teach children business

The Columbia Bank will provide $2,000 in seed money for a program at St. John's Lane Elementary School in Ellicott City that is designed to teach children about the challenges of starting and operating a company.

Third- and fifth-grade pupils will "invest" $20 each to fund their new businesses. They will pair off and create a company that will sell a product or service at the school's Goods and Services Fair, scheduled Feb. 26. The children are responsible for gathering materials, preparing advertising and staffing their booths.

Each pupil will sign a "contract" with the bank promising to repay the money to the bank's Grant Fund.

David T. Gramil has been named assistant vice president of Commercial Banking for the Columbia Bank. He will work with small to medium-sized businesses in the Baltimore metropolitan area and will be based in the bank's Columbia Town Center offices. Gramil was formerly an assistant vice president with NationsBank.

Frank R. Loys an Ellicott City resident and immediate past president of the Howard County Life Underwriters Association, has joined Provident Investment Center Inc., a subsidiary of Provident Bank of Maryland, as vice president/insurance director. He will manage the insurance division, which provides commercial, home, auto, life, health and disability insurance.
