Annapolis choir appoints a director

Joe Biddle has been named director of the Arundelair Choir.

The chorus, the Annapolis chapter of Sweet Adelines International, invites friends of barbershop-style harmonizing to join it in welcoming Biddle at 8 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Annapolis Naval Station Theatre, 89 Bennion Road. The event will include refreshments and singing.

Biddle signed on after the chorus conducted a search throughout the mid-Atlantic region. He has a bachelor's degree in voice performance from Ohio University. He has been involved in barbershop-style singing for the past 10 years. Most recently, he was assistant director at the Keystone Capital Chorus, a men's group in Harrisburg, Pa.

His musical experience also includes directing, conducting and performing in operas and musicals, as well as singing in several barbershop quartets.

County sponsors clinic for coaches

The Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks Department will hold a general coaches' clinic from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Severna Park High School auditorium, 60 Robinson Road at Benfield Road, Severna Park.

Attendance is mandatory for anyone who will be a head coach in Anne Arundel County's organized youth sports programs.

There is no fee or registration for the clinic.

The coaching certification is good for three years. A recertification clinic is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Severna Park High School cafeteria.

Basketball teams sought for a women's league

The Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks Department is seeking teams and players to participate in a women's basketball league. Registration is at 7 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Arundel Swim Center, 2690 Riva Road, Annapolis.

The league is open to women age 18 and older. Games will be played on Sundays at Glen Burnie High School.

There is a fee of $345 a team for the 10-game season. The registration fee is due at the organizational meeting.

Any fees paid after that date will be subject to a $25 late registration fee. Information: 410-222-7865.

Recreation and Parks announces new programs

The Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks Department has added new programs, including Thanksgiving or Christmas flower arranging and wreath making, children's theme parties, middle school teen dances, mother-daughter self-defense, and getting control of the holidays.

Detailed schedules of all programs and registration applications appear in the fall program guide.

The guides are available at Anne Arundel County public libraries, all county buildings and public schools, Giant, Safeway, Superfresh, ValuFood, Basic/Metro, Kmart, Wal-Mart, Blockbuster, CVS, and Drug Emporium.

They are also available at hospitals, some doctors' offices, retail stores, shopping centers, restaurants and fitness centers throughout the area.

Registration can be submitted by mail or at the county Recreation and Parks offices at 1 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Annapolis, where there is also an after-hours drop-box.

Association has invitations for Heart Ball on Nov. 14

The American Heart Association has invitations available for the Anne Arundel County Chapter's Heart Ball from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Loews Annapolis Hotel.

This year, the American Heart Association is honoring Annapolis businessman George Benson of Benson Motors Ltd. for his contributions to the community. Benson has lived and worked in Annapolis for 30 years, and has been a supporter of the American Heart Association and many other charitable organizations in Annapolis.

The Heart Ball will feature music by the Crabtowne Big Band and will include a raffle with certificates for eating at many restaurants in Annapolis and Washington. Raffle tickets are $10 each. An auction will be held featuring a cruise aboard the Seabourn Legend leaving from Barcelona, Spain, for Lisbon, Portugal, next fall.

Therapeutic riding group to hold winter session

Maryland Therapeutic Riding, an Annapolis nonprofit organization, will hold horse-riding sessions for people with special needs from Nov. 10 to Dec. 19. Riding times are available Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. A covered riding arena is used during inclement weather.

Annapolis-area volunteers are needed to help conduct the therapeutic riding sessions and assist with the horses and ponies.

MTR is a full-time therapeutic riding program serving Anne Arundel and Calvert counties.

Salvation Army seeks food donations for holidays

The Salvation Army of Annapolis and Southern Anne Arundel County is seeking donations of canned food and dry staples for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Canned vegetables and fruit, soup, pasta, macaroni and cheese, cereal, pancake mix and baby food are among the items needed. Information: 410-263-4091.
