County shifts deadline for planning committees Groups will draft plans for local properties

November 08, 1998|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

The Land Use and Environment Office has not been able to drum up enough citizen interest in local planning committees being created to represent the greater Severn, BWI, Linthicum, Maryland City and Jessup communities.

So, the office has extended the deadline until Nov. 23 for applications to those committees, which channel comments and suggestions about the future of neighborhoods to county planners.

The groups are charged with drafting plans to guide the use of private property and public spending on roads, parks, libraries, schools and senior centers for the next 20 years.

County officials hope to have the new groups appointed by next month and at work in January.

Although each area is supposed to have its own committee with 15 members and three alternates, only 40 applications have been received.

The application period for committees representing the Odenton, South County and Shady Side/Deale areas closed Oct. 30. Twenty applications were received from Odenton, 51 from Shady Side/Deale and 39 from south county.

The applications are available from county offices, libraries, police stations and civic groups. Residents can call the Land Use and Environment Office at 410-222-7583.
