A three-alarm fire in a warehouse near St. Agnes Hospital last night took two hours to bring under control and blanketed parts of Southwest Baltimore with thick smoke.

Several paper-recycling bins and part of a building at Nuway Distributors Warehouse caught fire about 9 p.m. on the 1000 block of Haverhill Road, fire officials said. The fire quickly spread to three alarms, said Battalion Chief Hector Torres.

He said the cause of the fire was under investigation and that no one was hurt.

Ground broken on complex for low-income elderly

Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke helped break ground yesterday on a 72-unit apartment building for low-income seniors to be built behind the Edward A. Myerberg Northwest Senior Center.

The apartment house, in the 3100 block of Fallstaff Road, will be called Weinberg Woods and is scheduled to be completed next summer. The complex is being built with a grant from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Centennial of streetcar to be celebrated tomorrow

The Baltimore Streetcar Museum will celebrate the centennial of an 1898 streetcar tomorrow from noon to 5 p.m. at its 1900 block of Falls Road headquarters near Penn Station.

A restored Baltimore Consolidated Railways car, retired from service in 1920, will be put into service for the public along with other cars in the museum's collection.

A fire burned out of control for nine hours yesterday and scorched about 10 acres of woods in Frederick County near Lewistown.

The fire was discovered shortly after 9 a.m. in a remote area of the Catoctin Mountains, northwest of Lewistown near Cunningham Falls State Park off U.S. 15, said Lewiston Volunteer Fire Chief Donald Stull.

No one was hurt and the cause of the fire is under investigation, he said.
