Angels: Named Gary Sutherland professional scouting coordinator.

Athletics: Extended contract of Billy Beane as GM through 2002.

Braves: Former bench coach Jim Beauchamp accepted job as coordinator of minor-league outfield instruction. Former hitting coach Clarence Jones will coach at Triple-A Richmond if he doesn't get major-league position with another team.

Cubs: Named 10-time All-Star 2B Ryne Sandberg instructor in major-league and minor-league camps. Named Marty DeMerritt pitching coach and Randy Bush minor-league hitting coordinator. Traded P Scott Downs to Twins to complete trade for former Orioles P Mike Morgan.

Devil Rays: Named Leon Roberts hitting coach.

Indians: Named Mark Shapiro VP of baseball operations and assistant GM, Neal Huntington director of player development, Paul DePodesta assistant to GM, Josh Byrnes director of scouting and Brad Grant assistant scouting director. Former pitching coach Mark Wiley, who held same position for Orioles, refused re-assignment and left organization.


Memphis: Suspended F Shamel Jones and F-C Kelly Wise indefinitely from basketball team for violating policy.


Chargers: Waived S Lloyd Lee. Released RB Chad Dukes from practice squad.

Chiefs: Signed free-agent DB Bracy Walker and DB Keith Crawford. Signed CB Jason Kaiser to practice squad. Waived DB Bucky Brooks. Released LB K. D. Williams from practice squad.

Jets: Waived P Brian Hansen. Signed P John Kidd.

Redskins: Signed DL David Hoelscher to practice squad. Released T Ozell Powell from practice squad.
