The 1-year-old calico cat that belonged to John A. Giannetti Jr., a Democrat who won his race for state delegate in a district that encompasses Laurel and North Laurel, died Monday -- four days after it was shot in front of Giannetti's Laurel townhouse.

"This is upsetting. We thought that she would be all right," Giannetti said during early campaigning yesterday in Laurel in his effort to unseat GOP Del. John S. Morgan in District 13B. He defeated Morgan 58 percent to 42 percent with all nine precincts reporting.

Giannetti said he let the cat, named Josie, outside at 6 a.m. Thursday. About 15 minutes later, he noticed the cat was meowing loudly and bleeding.

He took Josie to Rocky Gorge Animal Center in Laurel, where she initially was listed in stable condition.

The cat died Monday evening during an operation to remove the bullet in her chest that had grazed her intestines and liver.

Laurel police have heightened security around Giannetti's home since the shooting.
