Center visits UM Indiana other option

North Carolinian Leach seen deciding next week

October 30, 1998|By Paul McMullen

George Leach, a 6-foot-10 center from Charlotte, N.C., was expected at Maryland last night for an official recruiting visit. He has pared his options to the Terps and Indiana and is expected to announce his choice early next week.

"George is supposed to attend classes [today], check out the campus," said David Davis, his coach at Olympic High. "He attended Midnight Madness at Indiana, and evidently, they've gone all out to get him. He also took an official visit to South Carolina, but they know they're third."

The Terps' early frontcourt recruiting centered on Leach and Tahj Holden, a 6-9 forward from Little Silver, N.J., who will visit Syracuse this weekend. Besides Maryland, he also has visited Clemson. Dermarr Johnson, a highly regarded forward who's now at Maine Central Institute, also has shown interest in Maryland.

The early signing period for national letters of intent begins Nov. 11. The Terps have received oral commitments from point guard Steve Blake of Oak Hill (Va.) Academy and wing Drew Nicholas of Hempstead, N.Y.
