Terps defeat Wake on Armas' goal, 2-1 UM surprises in soccer

Senior midfielder Steve Armas scored in the 65th minute as 20th-ranked Maryland edged No. 12 Wake Forest, 2-1, last night in an Atlantic Coast Conference men's soccer game in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Demon Deacons (10-4-1, 1-2-1) struck first, getting a goal from Greg Krauss at 35: 43. The Terps (10-5, 3-2) answered less than five minutes later as Pierre Venditti converted off a pass from Jason Cropley.

Loyola 2, Siena 1: John Farese scored two goals in leading the Greyhounds (9-6-2, 5-2) to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win over the Saints (9-5-1, 5-3) at Goucher College.

The Greyhounds outshot the Saints, 13-1, in the first half and Farese opened the scoring with a goal in the seventh minute.

Farese scored the game-winner just four minutes into the second half, converting a pass from Christof Lindenmayer.

Johns Hopkins 3, Western Maryland 0: Rosario Chiarenza, Aerik Williams and Ryan Kitzen each had a goal as the visiting Blue Jays (13-1, 5-0 Centennial Conference) won their third straight and recorded their seventh shutout of the season.

Chiarenza's goal in the 42nd minute put the Blue Jays ahead 1-0 at halftime.

Women's soccer

Fairfield 4, Loyola 3, OT: Senior midfielder Colleen O'Connor scored her eighth goal of the season 11: 06 into the extra period to provide the visiting Stags (16-1, 9-0 MAAC) with their 13th straight victory and second consecutive regular-season conference championship.

The Greyhounds (8-7-1, 5-2) tied the game with 1: 50 left in regulation on a goal by Hannah Stark.

Johns Hopkins 2, Swarthmore 0: The host Blue Jays (11-2-1, 6-0-1) remained unbeaten in the Centennial Conference with a win over the Garnet Tide (6-10, 2-5). Alix Batty and Rachel Abelson scored for Hopkins.

Salisbury State 4, Goucher 0: The Sea Gulls (11-5, 4-2) managed to score three second-half goals in under 20 minutes on their way to beating the host Gophers (3-10, 1-5) in a Capital Athletic Conference game. Salisbury's Courtney Urban converted in the 48th and 52nd minutes, respectively, to seal the victory.

Field hockey

Johns Hopkins 1, Swarthmore 0: Freshman Maura Dudley scored with four minutes left to play as the host Blue Jays (9-6, 5-2 Centennial Conference) defeated the Garnet Tide (9-6, 4-1) for the first time since 1993.

Salisbury State 1, Frostburg State 0, OT: Gina Dean scored off a penalty stroke with 21 seconds left in the extra period as the 12th-ranked Sea Gulls (11-5) edged the host Bobcats (10-9).
