Athletics: Will not renew contracts of bench coach Duffy Dyer and first base coach Gary Jones. Hitting coach Denny Walling will not return.

Braves: Signed OF Gerald Williams to one-year contract.

Diamondbacks: Exercised $1.8 million option on P Brian Anderson and $850,000 option on former Orioles P Gregg Olson.

Phillies: Agreed to $1.1 million, two-year contract with 3B Alex Arias.

Rangers: Agreed to terms with OF Milt Cuyler on minor-league contract.

Twins: Declined to exercise $2.25 million option on C Terry Steinbach and $1.5 million option on OF Otis Nixon.

Basketball

Atlantic Basketball Association: Will merge with Eastern Basketball Alliance to form United Basketball Alliance for 1999 season.

College

South Carolina: Dismissed freshman DB Marcus Coleman for violation of team policy.

NHL: Suspended Predators LW Denny Lambert four games and fined him $1,000 for slashing Red Wings LW Kirk Maltby.

Utah (IHL): Signed Bruins holdout C Anson Carter to a short-term contract.
