Unranked Westminster scored twice within four minutes during the second half's first 13 minutes yesterday and turned back, 2-1, No. 4-ranked North Carroll's shot at its first undefeated regular season.

On a cold, windy afternoon in Hampstead, the same North Carroll team that beat Westminster on its own field Tuesday PTC night, 3-2, opened -- and closed -- its scoring in the game's early minutes.

Emily White, Westminster's stellar senior goalkeeper, was called for pushing the ball away with her hand on a save, and Meredith Gill converted the penalty into a 1-0 lead for North Carroll (11-1). The Panthers were the last Baltimore-area team to be undefeated and untied.

The home team controlled play for much of the half and charged back after giving up the goals, but the strong Westminster defense was equal to the job.

In the second half, Westminster (9-5) played as it had in the last 10 minutes Tuesday and had the Panthers hanging on.

At halftime, Westminster coach Brenda Baker simply reminded her team that it was one that doesn't quit.

"We knew North Carroll was a good offensive team, but we didn't think their defense had been tested. We wanted to get off more shots."

Her team reflected this in the second half, turning second shots into goals. Kelly Klima got the first out of a scramble in front of the cage, and Lauren Hare deflected in the second one, catching junior goalkeeper Devan Bosley going the wrong way after a shot by Katie Sciukas.

"I saw the ball coming and was determined to get to it," said Hare, a junior. "When I deflected the ball, it went right behind her."

Westminster's defense has had its ups and downs this season but did the job the rest of the way, led by junior Lisa Cavanaugh, and seniors Jessie Ray and Carrie Reeve.

In the closing moments, North Carroll had two good chances, but White came out each time to kick the ball away.
