HCC to provide free mini-classes to celebrate president's installation Faculty members to teach 45-minute lunch sessions

Howard Community College plans to celebrate the installation of its third president, Mary Ellen Duncan, with a series of free luncheon mini-classes called the Festival of Learning. The 45-minute classes, which begin Oct. 29, will be conducted by HCC faculty members on topics such as philosophy, baseball history, computers, acting and health care.

All classes take place on the campus at 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway and include lunch. To attend, call 410-772-4828. Space is limited.

For the Love of Wisdom -- The Telecourse: What do Solomon, Confucius, Winnie the Pooh and HCC's Helen Mitchell have in common? They are the stars of a telecourse with Mitchell that is based on her philosophy book and is being shown by PBS. Oct. 29, 12: 30 p.m. to 1: 15 p.m.

How Computers Brought a Baseball Legend to Life: Baseball historian and author Jerry Casway teamed with instructor Dave Hinton and his students to create 3-D renditions of Philadelphia's 1890s ballpark from old blueprints. Take a computer-animated tour. Nov. 3, 12: 30 p.m. to 1: 15 p.m.

What's Hot in Health Care Careers: Learn how HCC can help you get started in several entry-level careers, from cardiovascular technologist to biomedical specialist to sleep technician. Nov. 5, 12: 30 p.m. to 1: 15 p.m.

Computers -- What Do I Really Need to Know?: Learn whether you need to know how to set up a database, the minimum you need to know about the Internet and what all those Windows 95 icons mean. Hear training experts outline basic computer skills for home, office and school. Nov. 10, 12: 30 p.m. to 1: 15 p.m.

Acting for Television Or Your Home Videos: This class offers tips on voice, movement and appearance for family videos, commercials and television walk-ons. Nov. 12, 12: 30 p.m. to 1: 15 p.m.

Bring the Classroom to Your Home or Office: Learn what online courses, telecourses, customized training and accelerated classes are like and whether they're for you. Nov. 17, 12: 30 p.m. to 1: 15 p.m.

Business forum

Also in conjunction with Duncan's installation is a business and community leaders forum from 8 a.m. to 9: 30 a.m. Tuesday. The session will take place in the HCC Business Training Center, 6751 Gateway Drive, and will include a discussion of HCC's role in job training, work force development and partnerships with business, government and community organizations.
