Klein, Bales win Fourball title with 69 for 205

October 19, 1998|By John W. Stewart

BETHESDA -- Hank Klein and Greg Bales had not played Congressional Country Club before a practice round Thursday, but it seemed to make little difference as they shot 69 on the Blue Course yesterday, the low round of the day, to capture the ninth annual Congressional Fourball Championship.

After opening with rounds of 69 and 67, yesterday's score was enough to give the Richmond (Va.) pair a 54-hole total of 205 and a one-stroke margin over Paul Kane-David Passerell of Charlottesville, Va., 70-206.

Play was over 6,600 yards to a par 36-36--72.

In the Senior division, where play was at 6,200 yards, Mike Sanger of Hydes and Green Spring Valley Hunt Club and Jack Vardaman of Congressional CC completed a wire-to-wire win with a closing 72-204 to claim their second title in this event and third as a team.

Mike Timbers-Denny Gallagher of Englewood, Colo., placed second with 71-210.
