Dr. William R. Brody of the Johns Hopkins University is one of 13 presidents of private colleges to earn more than $400,000, according to a survey released today by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

The $435,592 paid to Brody in 1996-1997 put him ninth on the list headed by Rockefeller University's Torsten N. Weisel, who earned $546,966 in pay and benefits.

In a recent interview, Michael R. Bloomberg, chairman of Johns Hopkins' board of trustees, said Brody was, if anything, underpaid. "I know people think he earns a lot of money, but he heads a $1.5 billion operation," he said. "Someone in the commercial world doing that would earn a lot more."

The survey, using data from tax records that nonprofit operations such as colleges must file, found that 46 presidents earned above $300,000 in the 1996-1997 school year. That was nearly double the 25 presidents who earned above that mark in 1993-1994.

The data showed that the median pay for presidents of colleges and universities rose by 4.3 percent -- well above the 2.1 percent inflation rate -- to $168,662.

Brody's actual salary of $396,706 was the sixth-highest, but others received more in bonuses and other payments.

Among private Maryland schools, the survey found that the next-highest-paid president was the Rev. Harold E. "Hap" Ridley Jr. of Loyola, with pay and benefits of $226,916, followed by Judy Jolley Mohraz of Goucher at $205,065.

The 10 highest-paid are:

Torsten N. Weisel, Rockefeller University: $546,966

Joe B. Wyatt, Vanderbilt University: $525,496

Judith Rodin, University of Pennsylvania: $514,878
