Volunteers to hear speech on marketing for nonprofits

The Coordinators of Volunteers of Anne Arundel County meets at 8: 30 a.m. Wednesday at Bay Media Inc. in the Severn Commerce Center, 1244 Ritchie Highway, Arnold.

Pat Troy, president of Bay Media, will speak on "Marketing, Online Services, and Publications for Non-Profits."

The meeting is open to any volunteer coordinator interested in networking and program education.

Reichardt golf tournament will be Oct. 26 at Bay Hills

The Kevin E. Reichardt Foundation's fourth KR Memorial Golf Tournament will be played with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Oct. 26 at Bay Hills Golf Club.

Funds raised at the tournament help provide scholarships to students in memory of Kevin E. Reichardt, who was killed in a random shooting at the University of North Carolina in January 1995.

The tournament is open to male and female golfers.

Reichardt's friends created the the foundation to promote the scholarship program. Two scholarships are awarded each year to students at St. Mary's High School, which Reichardt attended.

Parks department announces holiday camps for children

The Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks has announced that holiday camps for children in kindergarten through age 6 will offered from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, Nov. 23, 24 and 25 at South County Recreation Center.

Participants are required to bring lunches. Snacks will be provided. The fee is $15 per student per day. Because of limited enrollment, registration is required.

Program guides which contain registration applications are available at all county buildings, schools and public libraries. They also can be obtained at Wal-Mart, Kmart, Giant, Safeway, ValuFood, Basic/Metro, Lauer's, Mars and Blockbuster stores and at hospitals, restaurants and fitness centers.

Registration can be sent in by mail or taken to Recreation and Parks offices at 1 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Annapolis, where there is an after-hours drop box.

Severn River Land Trust to celebrate 10th birthday

The Severn River Land Trust Inc. is celebrating its 10th anniversary with an open house reception for landowners from 5: 30 p.m. to 7: 30 p.m. Thursday at Senior Quarters at Manresa.

A brief presentation will be made at 6: 30 p.m. to recognize key county and state officials and private landowners who have contributed to Severn River land protection efforts.

The work of the trust will be displayed in photographs, publications and background material. Refreshments will be served.

Group provides scholarships for study of architecture

The Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the American Institute of Architects awards scholarships each year to students studying architecture whose primary residence is in the Maryland counties served by the chapter.

The counties are Anne Arundel, Calvert, St. Mary's, Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico and Worcester.

The chapter gives a $1,000 stipend to offset the costs of the selected applicant's studies in architecture for the 1998-1999 academic year.

Conflict Resolution Center offers scholarships, training

The Anne Arundel Conflict Resolution Center is offering scholarships for young people age 13 to 20 interested in creating and encouraging peaceful methods of resolving conflict.

The scholarships pay for 40 hours of mediation training. The classes are held in the evening and on weekends and also will be offered in the spring.

To qualify, teens must be committed to peace in the community. They must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm manner, have good interpersonal skills, be nonjudgmental, have reliable transportation to the Conflict Resolution Center, which is on Riva Road in Annapolis, and be available during the year after the training to volunteer up to four hours a week.

The center has also scheduled two community mediation training sessions open to anyone interested in learning mediation and conflict resolution skills.

The 20-hour training sessions are scheduled today and Thursday and Nov. 5, 7, 8, and 12.

The training takes place at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold. Each course costs $200, which includes a training manual, lunch and snacks. Preregistration saves $50. Financial assistance and payment plans are available.

YWCA to hold flea market today in Severna Park

The YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County will hold an "Attic Treasures" flea market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. today outside Antiques to Go and The Other Side of the Fence, 820 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park (between Severna Park Bowl and Pete's Cycle).

Merchandise for sale will include antiques and collectibles, household and decorative items, toys, clothes, books, records and tapes. Food will be available.
