Quotable

"They're the best football team I've seen in this league. I don't care who else there is, what their records are. Certainly the best against me when I coach, I know that."

Mike Ditka, Saints coach, on the 49ers, who beat his team, 31-0, and have won eight of 11 meetings with the ex-Bears coach.

"We have the best 30th-ranked defense you've ever seen in your life."

-- Winfred Tubbs, 49ers linebacker, whose team limited the Saints to 167 yards.

"We made enough errors to last a season. This is the best football team we've played all season."

-- Marty Schottenheimer, Chiefs coach, after 40-10 loss to the Patriots.

"I don't think there's any area of the game we didn't feel good about. Even the sun came out."

-- Pete Carroll, Patriots coach.

By the numbers

Records: The Jets' John Hall's 54-yard field goal matched the longest ever against the Rams. The Bills' Thurman Thomas has a team-record 1,204 yards for his career against the Colts. The Broncos' Terrell Davis scored his 44th career rushing touchdown for Denver, breaking Floyd Little's club record of 43 set from 1967 to 1975.

Streaks: The Colts' Marshall Faulk extended his streak of consecutive games with at least one reception to 67, second to Kellen Winslow's NFL record of 73 straight games to start a career. The last time the Saints scored against the 49ers in the Superdome was Nov. 3, 1996. The Saints' sack in the fourth quarter extended the longest current streak of games with at least one sack to 54 games. The Chiefs ended their team-record streak of 13 regular-season games with at least 100 yards rushing. Terrell Davis had his fifth straight 100-yard rushing game. The Jets have lost five straight to the Rams.

Ups: The Cowboys' Emmitt Smith had back-to-back 100 yard games for the first time since 1995. The Broncos beat the Seahawks for the fifth straight time and for the 10th time in 12 meetings. Terrell Davis' rushing total after six games is 865 yards. He's on a pace to run for 2,306, which would be an NFL record. Eric Dickerson holds the record with 2,105 yards set for the Los Angeles Rams in 1984. The Saints had their first sellout since Oct. 12, 1997. A group of car dealers bought the last 2,000 tickets in time to lift the TV blackout.

Downs: The Chiefs suffered their worst loss since Oct. 30, 1994, when they were beaten at Buffalo, 44-10. The Jets have 16 turnovers in their first five games.

Next week

Redskins (0-6) at Vikings (5-0): This looked like a decent matchup when the schedules were first posted, but now it's possibly the season's biggest mismatch. And Minnesota will come in rested and healthy after a bye.

Jets (2-3) at Patriots (4-1): That's right, it's Tuna Bowl III. The teams split games I and II last year, but New England looks much stronger than Bill Parcells' club this time around.
