Tutors Needed

Area schools, libraries and literacy programs use volunteers to help children and adults improve reading skills.

Among them are:

SECO-LIFT, Southeast Community Organization-Learning Is For Tomorrow, an adult literacy program, 10 S. Wolfe St., Baltimore, for one-on-one phonics training; primarily for adults whose reading ability is below second-grade level. Training and materials are provided. Hours are flexible, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the center, with Friday night and Saturday and Sunday times possible at libraries. Information: Tina Oxendine, 410-327-1626.

Uplift Reading Center, 1634 Guilford Ave., Baltimore, to assist students ages 12 to 18 in reading and computer skills. Volunteers are needed from 3: 30 p.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. Contact: Salah Fatah, 410-333-6777 or 410-333-3560.
