Chamber sponsors forum for county, state candidates

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor two candidate forums this month.

The first, on Tuesday, will feature candidates for state senator and delegate.

The second forum will be Oct. 13, featuring candidates for County Commissioner.

Both forums are 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Wilhelm Ltd. Caterers on Route 140 in Westminster.

Family center presents varied events for members

The Carroll County Family Center will offer activities for member families this month.

Parents and their children can take a tour of the Westminster Fire Department for Fire Prevention Week at 9 a.m. Tuesday. A different fire prevention activity will be featured each day.

The center is closed for Columbus Day on Oct. 12.

Families are invited to take a trip to the Larriland pumpkin patch for a hayride and walk through a straw maze from 10: 15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 15. Cost is $3 per family and registration is required.

BEAR (Be Enthusiastic About Reading) Day will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 27, with storytelling, crafts and games.

The Family Center is at 10 Distillery Drive, Westminster.

Firefighters sponsor awards and poster contest

The Carroll County Volunteer Firemen's Association will have its awards ceremony and display for its third annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest at 7 p.m. Friday at Cranberry Mall in Westminster.

The grand prize, semifinal and honorable-mention winners will be announced.

The ceremony will include an appearance by Patches and Pumper, an animated Dalmatian dog robot dressed in fire helmet and coat that encourages fire-prevention practices.

Posters will be displayed at the mall during Fire Prevention Week.

Meals on Wheels sells entertainment books

The Carroll County branch of Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is selling the Entertainment Ultimate '99 book as a fund-raiser for its programs.

The book includes coupons for two-for-one offers, and up to 50 percent savings on a variety of food, sports, entertainment, ac- commodations, travel and more. Books sell for $35. Orders: 410-857-4447.

County award winner to attend state reception

Paula G. Kellerhouse is Carroll County's 1998 Most Beautiful People award winner.

She was selected from 40 nominees and will represent the county at a reception with Gov. Parris N. Glendening on Oct. 28 in Annapolis.

County Commissioners held a recognition ceremony for nominees Thursday at the New Windsor Conference Center.

Kellerhouse has been president of Christmas in April, volunteers for Carroll Hospice, teaches patients to care for their colostomies and helps patients and families cope with illnesses.

She also collects clothing for Shepherd's Staff and takes groceries to food banks and soup kitchens, and collects and donates toys to Human Services Programs of Carroll County Inc.

County has announced roadwork for this week

The Carroll County Bureau of Roads Operations has announced roadwork for this week.

Deep milling and patching: Leisters Church Road No. 1 from Route 482 to Dutrow Road.

Patching: Alpine Court from Toggenburg Drive to the cul-de-sac.

Shoulder work: Barnhart Road from Old Hanover Road to Geeting; Clearview Road from Trevanion Road to Middleburg Road; Old Hanover near Silver Run Valley Road.

Pipe installation: Nusbaum Road one-quarter mile from Trevanion.

Shoulder work, reclamation: Buffalo Road from Sams Creek Road to Roop Road.

Reclamation: Melville Road from Oakland Mills Road to Haight Avenue; Haight from Oakland Road to Melville; Lakeview Drive from Haight to the cul-de-sac.

Paving: Tyrone Road from Route 832 to Route 140; Monroe Avenue from Route 26 to Ridge Road.
