Mount Airy event to offer food, music, arts and crafts

THE STREETS OF MOUNT Airy will be bustling with excitement, food and games for all ages tomorrow and Sunday during the Festival on the Ridge fall celebration.

Visitors can enjoy street performances, bands, bed races, craft tables and artists' displays. Children will be able to visit animals in a petting zoo, have their hair painted, play games and make scarecrows.

The festival will also feature a Civil War encampment, eating contests and a baby photo contest.

Shuttle buses to downtown Mount Airy will be available from the Mount Airy Carnival grounds at Route 27 and Twin Arch Road.

The Festival on the Ridge is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Fun Run kickoff

Mount Airy Elementary School PTA invites people to join its Fun Run tomorrow.

Families with children of all ages are encouraged to participate in this annual 1-mile kickoff event for the Mount Airy Festival on the Ridge.

Participants will meet at the Mount Airy municipal parking lot at 8: 30 a.m. Warm-ups will be held 8: 40 a.m. to 8: 50 a.m., and the run will start at 9 a.m.

The course will loop around several streets in Mount Airy and will end at the municipal lot.

A 5-kilometer run for ages 14 and older is planned Sunday. Runners will meet at the municipal parking lot at 8: 30 a.m. for the 9 a.m. race. The race will begin and end at the Firehouse Pub and Grill. Registration is $2.

Fire company dinner

The Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company will serve its fall dinner beginning at noon Sunday.

The dinner will feature turkey, oysters, ham, hot vegetables and a baked goods table.

The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 12. Children younger than 5 eat free. Carryout dinners will be available for $10.50.

The dinners will be served at the Fireman's Park Activities Building at Route 27 and Twin Arch Road. Proceeds will benefit the fire company.

Play auditions

The Mount Airy Players will hold open auditions for their December production of "Anne of Green Gables" Monday and Tuesday at Calvary United Methodist Church, 403 S. Main St., Mount Airy.

Auditions will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Roles are available for five men and women ages 25 to 65, four girls ages 8 to 17 and two boys ages 13 to 17.

Winfield dinner

The Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department will hold its fall dinner at noon Sunday. The dinner includes roast beef, ham, fried chicken and a baked goods table.

Cost is $8.50 for adults, $3.50 for children ages 6 to 12 and $10 for carryout. Information: 410-795-4640.
