HEREFORD -- A Hereford Middle School student who contracted viral meningitis, a less serious form of the disease, is home recovering, and classes will not be interrupted, school officials said.

The unidentified student was tested and treated at a hospital, said Michele Prumo, coordinator of the Baltimore County Public School Office of Health Services. Though no classes were canceled, Prumo said, letters were sent to parents Tuesday alerting them to the student's illness and telling them they should not be unduly concerned.

Health officials said about 40 cases of the various strains of meningitis are reported annually throughout Baltimore County.
