Mall's developers expect to sign leases with retailers Updated Harundale Plaza slated for spring opening

Developers of Harundale Plaza in Glen Burnie expect to begin signing leases with retail stores, including a video store, a dry cleaner and hair salon, in the next two weeks, a spokesman said yesterday.

Richard C. Darrell, who is handling Harundale leasing for Manekin Corp., said he expects to sign a retail chain store specializing in ready-to-wear clothing for families within the next 10 days. He would not name the chain, but said it does not have a store in the Baltimore area.

The anchor stores -- Superfresh and Value City -- already have signed leases, and Darrell said the leases for 12 to 15 small retail stores at the revamped mall should all be signed by the end of winter. Manekin expects the mall to open by late spring.

"This is a fabulous location," said Darrell, who spoke at a breakfast meeting Manekin organized to inform the community about the changes. "For years, Harundale proved that before, and I think we're going to see some sales that are going to be phenomenal."

Columbia-based Manekin Corp. is converting Harundale Mall, the first enclosed shopping center east of the Mississippi, into a retail strip center.

Rouse Co., which developed Columbia, built the original $10 million mall 40 years ago during the post-World War II suburban boom. But as competition developed from newer nearby malls with big-name stores, Harundale's occupancy and customer traffic steadily dropped.

Manekin took over the mall in December and began partial demolition of the existing structure in March.

"Retail changes, and it's up to the area to incorporate changes so you don't have things just falling by the wayside when they could be an asset to the community," said Griff Hall, executive director of the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce.

Plans for the shopping center include an outdoor gathering place for seniors because the demolition took away a place where many of them spent afternoons with friends or playing the lottery.

Darrell said he expects the new stores to do well because Glen Burnie is a densely populated area with households having a high average income -- about $50,000.

"It's a retailer's dream," he said.
