Orioles' ups and downs

September 27, 1998|By Joe Strauss

Jr. -- UP -- It's been a week since Cal Ripken ended The Streak and gave Camden Yards a moment few expected would happen this season. Yes, it is "time to change the subject," but not before embracing the city that has forever embraced him.

1998 -- DOWN -- A season that began with promise crumbled early and ends in uncertainty. An off-season face lift awaits.

Dan O'Dowd -- UP -- The Orioles were willing to jump through the Cleveland Indians' hoops to interview him for the GM vacancy. He apparently enjoys the support of Pat Gillick. Reds general manager Jim Bowden, the chic pick in August, may not fit the warehouse profile for Gillick's successor.

Mike Flanagan -- UP -- Could the Orioles' pitching coach be tTC headed up the food chain? Hmmm.

Team chemistry -- DOWN -- Ripken says winning creates chemistry rather than vice versa. He should introduce this season into evidence. What began the season as a team ended it in factions.

Calvin Pickering -- UP --What do David Cone and Pedro Martinez have in common? Both are Cy Young Award candidates. Both were taken deep by the Orioles rookie first baseman in a span of six days. Lose 20 (or 30) pounds and see us in February. Still looked great in a loose-fitting floral number Wednesday night as part of the traditional rookie hazing.
