Last year: Hale Irwin won the seventh of nine 1997 titles, closing with a 7-under 65 for a two-stroke victory over Gil Morgan. Irwin, a playoff loser to Gibby Gilbert in 1996, had a 16-under 200 total.
Last week: South Africa's Hugh Baiocchi won the rain-shortened Kroger Classic at Mason, Ohio. Baiocchi, the Comfort Classic winner the previous week, birdied the second hole of a playoff with Bob Charles, Frank Conner, Larry Nelson and Bruce Summerhays.
Skinny: Irwin, a six-time winner this year, has earned a record $2,344,670 in 18 starts, $1,306 more than he made last year in 23 events.
