EDGEMERE -- A man died yesterday of injuries he suffered when he was thrown from the bed of a pickup truck that crashed into a telephone pole, county police said.

Police said Deborah J. Jernigan, 39, of the 7400 block of Blevins Ave. in Edgemere was driving a 1994 Ford Ranger south in the 2300 block of Lincoln Ave. about 2 a.m. when the accident occurred.

Wesley R. Kofskey, 32, of the 7300 block of N. Dakota Ave. in Edgemere was thrown from the truck bed and died a short time later at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, police said. They said Michael K. Stumpf, 44, another passenger whose address was not available, was in serious condition at Bayview and Jernigan was in critical condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center last night.

Human Relations Commission picks chancellor as speaker


TIMONIUM -- Irving Pressley McPhail, chancellor of the Community Colleges of Baltimore County, will be the guest speaker Oct. 14 at the 35th anniversary banquet of the county Human Relations Commission.

The banquet will be at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Timonium Plaza. Three awards will be presented to individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the agency, which monitors civil rights enforcement.

Debt-reduction class offered in Catonsville


CATONSVILLE -- A three-hour course on how to minimize debt will be offered at 7 p.m. Oct. 1 at Catonsville Community College.

The course, designed for middle-income earners, will demonstrate how to pay off vehicle loans and mortgages more quickly. A similar course will be offered Nov. 9.
