Yankees update

New York had lost two straight before beating Tampa Bay last night, which meant little to a club that has been alone in first place in the AL East since April 21 and was close to playing .700 ball. They've tailed off some, though, going 13-16 over their past 29 games. They remain the only AL club with an ERA under 4.00 and have set a league record by having five players in double figures in home runs and stolen bases. These teams haven't met since the Yankees swept a three-game series in New York to close the first half. Each game was decided by one run. Cone threw eight shutout innings to out-duel Scott Erickson, and Hernandez limited the Orioles to two earned runs over eight innings. The Orioles took two of three in Baltimore on June 15-17, highlighted by 6 2/3 shutout innings from Ponson for his first major-league victory. Wells was beaten the night before, allowing 10 hits and five runs in six innings. The Orioles will find out if any bad blood remains from the May 19 brawl in New York, during a three-game Yankees sweep.
