Last year: Gabriel Hjertstedt became the tour's first Swedish winner, closing with a 2-under 70 for a one-stroke victory over Lee Rinker, Chris Perry and Andrew Magee. Hjertstedt had a 13-under 275 total.

Last week: Billy Andrade won the Canadian Open in Oakville, Ontario, beating Bob Friend with a par on the first hole of a playoff. Andrade finished with a 3-under 69 to match Friend at 13-under 275.

Skinny: Hal Sutton won the 1995 tournament, closing with a course-record 61 for a one-stroke victory over Jim McGovern. Joey Sindelar, a resident of nearby Horseheads, is the only two-time champion, winning in 1985 and 1987.

Format: Tomorrow and Saturday, four morning alternate-shot matches and four afternoon better-ball matches. Sunday, 12 singles matches.

Series: United States leads 3-1.

Last match: Michelle McGann beat English star Laura Davies, 3 and 2, as the United States went 9-1-2 in singles to beat Europe, 17-11, at Chepstow, Wales. Betsy King led the U.S. team with a 3-0 record. Sweden's Annika Sorenstam had a tournament-best four points, going 3-0-2.

Skinny: Sorenstam won the Safeco Classic last week in Kent, Wash. She has four victories this year and tops the money list with $896,188. Muirfield Village also was the site of the 1987 Ryder Cup, with Europe winning in the United States for the first time. Europe's lone Solheim Cup victory was in 1992 at Dalmahoy in Scotland.

Last year: Jay Sigel shot 66-6366 for a tournament-record 18-under 195 total. Japan's Isao Aoki, the 1996 winner, finished second, seven strokes back.

Last week: South Africa's Hugh Baiocchi won the Comfort Classic at Indianapolis, shooting 66-63-67 for a tournament-record 20-under 196 total.

Skinny: Hale Irwin, skipping the tournament, earned $42,320 for a fifth-place tie last week to break the money record he set last year. The three-time U.S. Open champion has earned $2,344,670 in 18 starts, $1,306 more than he made last year in 23 events. He has six victories this year. Mike Hill won the 1995 tournament, and also took the PGA Tour's 1977 Ohio Kings Island Open on the Grizzly course.
