Howard County Heritage Week

Celebrate Howard County's heritage and cultural resources at Howard County Heritage Week, Saturday through Sept. 27, throughout the county. Attend a Civil War encampment during Heritage Weekend at the Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park Saturday and Sunday, enjoy free apple samples and children's activities at the Johnny Appleseed Festival at Weber's Cider Mill Farm Saturday and Sunday or take part in Fall Harvest Day with pumpkin hunts and scarecrow-making at Patapsco Valley State Park Saturday. Watch a soap-making demonstration at the Howard County Center of African-American Culture Sunday, take a narrated garden tour of the Belmont Manor House Monday, hear lectures, see art exhibits and attend book signings, all throughout the area. Heritage Week is sponsored by the Howard County Historical and Cultural Alliance.

"The Navy Way Days"

Learn all about the Navy way this weekend at the U.S. Naval Academy. See displays, exhibits, demonstrations, equipment, including cannons and missile systems, Humvees and more, from the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps inside and outside the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center. Visitors can board the Naval Academy Yard patrol boat, see remarkable displays from the U.S. Navy SEALS, speak with admissions staff of the Naval Academy, see a representation of the Steichen Collection of World War II Navy Photographs and U.S. Navy Department Prints of Navy Uniforms, 1775-1898, watch model ship-building, knot-tying and Civil War gun-loading demonstrations, hear chamber music from the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra and partake in many other activities.

While in Annapolis this weekend, stop by the Chesapeake Catamaran Center in Eastport for a glimpse at new and used yachts at the Multihull Expo. Watch sailing demonstrations and seminars, browse the catamarans for sale, and for those interested in buying, sail out on the boat of your choosing. Everyone is invited to a test sail.
