Red Sox update

The Red Sox are breathing a little easier today. Last night they pounded the Yankees, 9-4, and Toronto lost to Cleveland, increasing Boston's wild-card lead to four games over the Blue Jays. The Orioles' long-shot hopes also took a tumble in a ninth-inning loss, leaving them 7 1/2 games back. The Red Sox, who lead Texas by 4 1/2 games, had lost three straight and eight of 10 before Tim Wakefield (16-8) stopped the Yankees. They are 45-28 at home, but just 38-38 on the road. The Orioles swept a four-game series from Boston at Camden Yards, July 9-12. The first three games were decided by one run. Erickson held the Red Sox to one run in 8 2/3 innings, the only damage a homer by John Valentin. Since moving to the cleanup spot, shortstop Nomar Garciaparra is batting .325 (65-for-200) with 14 homers and 42 RBIs. These teams will conclude the regular season with a four-game series in Boston.
