Harford County previews Field hockey

September 10, 1998|By Mark Hoeflich

Aberdeen Eagles

1997 record: 2-12

Coach: Debbie Bowman

Top players: Kelly Ault, So.., A; Marya Erickson, Jr., M; Chrissy Gossman, Jr., D; Courtney Keithly, Sr., D; Jen Rosinski, Jr., M; Sarah Weeks, Jr., A

Outlook: With only one senior back, the Eagles will get a lot of on-the-job training. The back line has little experience and a sophomore goalkeeper. Many of Bowman's players took last fall off.

Bel Air Bobcats

1997 record: 8-5-1

Coach: Phyllis Hemmes

Top players: Kristi Hook, Sr., M; Jacque LaFleur, Jr., A; Meghan McAndrew, Sr., M; Tricia Scott, Sr., D; Anna Woods, Sr., D

Outlook: Having Harford County's most prolific scorer in LaFleur, who had 23 goals and three assists as a sophomore last season, the Bobcats are positioned for a run at county and regional titles. Woods and Hook, who look to increase their goal production, are complementary players. Defense will play a bigger role.

C. Milton Wright Mustangs

1997 record: 7-5-1

Coach: Carla Harwood

Top players: Gena Barnabee, Jr, D; Krista Bruno, Jr., A; Gina Elutrio, Jr., D; Megan Manuel, Sr., A; Lauren Popiolek, Jr., M; Sarah Rueckert, Sr., D; Meghan Zorn, So., D

Outlook: The Mustangs have just three experienced starters as Harwood attempts to use a new formation to improve transition play. Rueckert is the only starter back on an untested defense that will be pressured unless a scorer emerges.

Edgewood Rams

1997 record: Not available

Coach: Cass Mairs

Top players: Lauren Chmura, Jr., M; Julie DiCarlo, Jr., M; Bethany Duke, Jr., A

Outlook: First-year coach Mairs inherits a team full of novice players. The emphasis will be on improving fundamentals.

Fallston Cougars

1997 record: 15-2

Coach: Alice Puckett

Top players: Chrissy Brockmeyer, Sr., D; Paula Priest, Sr., M; Ashley Staples, Sr., G.; Jeanine Tyler, Sr., M

Outlook: The Cougars are missing their usual star power, but Puckett does not expect a drop-off in intensity. The attack needs some building, but the defense is strong in the middle with Brockmeyer and goalkeeper Staples. "It's still a quick and hard-working team. They just have to learn to play together," Puckett said. Fallston, which has not lost a league title in the 1990s, advanced to five of the last six state finals.

Harford Christian Eagles

1997 record: 2-9

Coach: Cathy Reese

Top players: Natalie Cooper, Sr., M; Rebecca Freeman, Sr., D; Kristen McKnight, Sr., M; Debbie Petrecca, Sr., M; Kelley Williams, Sr., M

Outlook: McKnight was last season's leading scorer, but the concern is how well the defense will hold up with only one returning starter and a first-time goalkeeper.

Harford Tech Cobras

1997 record: No team

Coach: William Hurd

Top players: Amanda Duckworth, Sr., D; Pam Edwards, Jr. A-M; Tiffany Morgan, Jr., G.; Ronda Price, Soph., A; Jessica Seavey, Jr., M

Outlook: The Cobras, in their first varsity season, will play six games. Most players have two years of experience or less, but Hurd, who coached last year's 2-2-1 JV, terms the skill level above average.

Havre de Grace Warriors

1997 record: 7-5

Coach: Judy Forder

Top players: None provided

Outlook: The momentum of consecutive winning seasons could be slowed by the loss of eight seniors. Although the Warriors must break in a freshman goalie, the rest of the defense is ahead of schedule. Musgrove is the leader in the middle of field and a potential top scorer.

John Carroll Patriots

1997 record: 4-6-3

Coach: Tess Gauthier

Top players: Emily Gray, So., A; Mandy Naworol, Sr., M; Tara Parekh, Sr., M; Jamie Porcella, Sr., G.; Heather Rosso, Sr., A; Jana Sacchinei, So., A; Marin Van Shura, Sr., M

Outlook: Several players up from JV are expected to be impact players, among them Gray and Sacchinei, whose talents could mean more scoring. The defense has four new faces and will grow quickly with a September schedule that includes five games against Association of Independent Schools A Division teams.

Joppatowne Mariners

1997 record: 4-7

Coach: Pam Reich

Top players: Shauntella Edwards, Jr., D; Debbie Hardin, Sr., M; Denise Kurkytaka, Sr., G.; Amanda Shoff, Sr., D; Tina Walters, Jr., A; Sarah Whisted, Jr., A

Outlook: The Mariners' play begins in the back, where Kurkytaka is a three-year starter in goal and Shoff and Edwards are quick up the middle. Reich believes her speedy group has staying power.

North Harford Hawks

1997 record: 5-7

Coach: Barbara Waite

Top players: Holly Arrowhead, Sr., D; Amy Ayers, Sr., A; Meghan Harkins, Sr., A; Jenn Renfro, Sr., D; Elizabeth Storrs, Sr., D; Shannon Troyer, Sr., M

Outlook: With nine seniors, Waite thinks the Hawks can push for the county championship. Troyer is a Team Maryland selection and a key player in getting the ball upfield. A senior-laden defense should remain among the league's stingiest.
