The following activities are planned at Elkridge Landing Middle School, 7085 Montgomery Road:

Parents may nominate new students in Howard County schools for possible inclusion in the gifted-and-talented classes, including math, English, science and social studies. Students nominated must be tested. Testing will take place Sept. 18 and 22.

Information about sending a nomination letter: 410-313-5040.

Because of the cost of the outdoor education trip -- $85 a student and $45 a chaperon -- the school is asking for donations to the scholarship fund for students unable to pay the fee. You may donate all or part of the $85 fee. Make checks payable to Elkridge Landing Middle School and make sure the note space on the check reads "OE Scholarship Fund."

The school's media center book fair will be held Nov. 9-13. Students will be able to buy books during school hours.

Back-to-school night is planned Sept. 23, with an open house at 6: 30 p.m. and a PTA meeting at 7 p.m.

Kangaroo Kids, a nonprofit organization that promotes fitness through rope-jumping, will hold tryouts from 4: 30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Harper's Choice Middle School, 5450 Beaverkill Road, Columbia. Wear comfortable clothes and aerobic shoes.

Information: Jean Hodges, 410-880-0781.

Sixth-grade students and parents are invited to a program featuring a scavenger hunt, storytelling, book talks and refreshments from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Elkridge branch of the Howard County Library.
