Tony Green Memorial Walk/Run to be held Sept. 27

THE ANNUAL TONY Green Memorial Walk/Run will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 27 at Watkins Park in Mount Airy.

This event is sponsored by Mount Airy NET, a nonprofit organization that helps residents who need emergency assistance. Registration fees and/or sponsor money will be used to help neighbors in need.

Registration for the walk/run will begin at 12: 15 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Watkins Park pavilion at Route 27 and Center Street.

Walkers and runners will begin at 1 p.m. and may complete the one-mile Richard A. Wilson Trail as many times as they choose. The fee is $3 for students, $7 for adults and $15 for a family.

The event honors the memory of Green, who was active in the community and was vice president of the board of the NET.

For anyone interested in obtaining sponsors to support them and Mount Airy NET, sponsor sheets are available at the Mount Airy Town Office, the Mount Airy library and Green Computer Concepts, 1 S. Main St.

Participants who collect more than $20 will receive an event T-shirt. Contributions are tax-deductible and checks should be made payable to Mount Airy NET.

Cookies, drinks from McDonald's and water from M & M Spring Water will be provided. Prizes from local businesses will be awarded during a drawing. Entertainment, including magician Josh Norris, is planned for the afternoon.

Square dancing lessons

Four County Squares invites the community to join its square dance class from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., beginning Sept. 16, at South Carroll High School, 1300 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield.

No previous dance experience is necessary for this activity, which stresses fun and fitness. Information: Bob Harrison, 410-795-2369.

Traveling basketball teams

Woodbine Recreation Council sponsors two basketball teams in the Carroll County Basketball League for children in grades four, five and six who are ages 12 and younger and for youths in grades seven and eight, age 14 and younger.

Tryouts will be held from 7 p.m. to 8: 30 p.m. Sept. 21 and 24 at the South Carroll High School gym. Information: Walt Hinton, basketball commissioner, 410-635-2316.

Slimnastics program planned

Winfield Recreation Council is taking registrations for its Slimnastics class. The class, which will focus on toning exercises for adults, will run for 10 weeks.

The program will begin Sept. 28 with classes from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays in the Winfield Elementary School cafeteria. Cost is $25. Information/registration: 410-875-2892 after 6 p.m.
