Giants: Jeff Kent's 13-game hitting streak, a career high, is second this season on the team to a 17-game streak by Bill Mueller.

Expos: Steve Kline made his NL-leading 70th appearance with two innings of relief.

Pirates: Elmer Dessens became the 10th pitcher to start a game for Pittsburgh this season. Last season, the Pirates used only seven starters to tie the major-league low.

Braves: Javier Lopez extended his hitting streak to career-high 11 games, but failed to homer after going out of the park in four straight games. Greg Maddux needs one strikeout for 2,000 in his career. Hometown heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, who will defend his title at the Georgia Dome on Sept. 19, threw out the first pitch.
