Transportation equipment

Put away your Tonka trucks and see the real things this weekend at an exhibit by the Maryland Department of Transportation at Cranberry Mall. See heavy transportation equipment, including snowplows, dump trucks and $ early-response vehicles, inside and outside the mall. Meet the operators of the machinery and learn how the pieces function. View videos that explain transportation services in Maryland, check your own driving records and meet and speak with representatives from the State Highway Administration, Maryland Transportation Authority, Mass Transit Administration, Motor Vehicle Administration, Maryland Port Administration and the Maryland Aviation Administration.

The exhibit takes place tomorrow and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at Cranberry Mall, 400 N. Center St., Westminster. Free. Call 410-876-8870 or 410-857-0300.

You'll be seeing stars at the Baltimore Museum of Art tonight, during the First Thursday events. Start with the BMA's latest exhibit, "Starry Nights: Star-Patterned Quilts from the Collection," and view six star quilts from the mid-19th century, then attend a quilting workshop to create your own star-patterned sampler using your own materials or those provided. Workshop is for all ages.

Catch some more stars on stage as Mama Jama performs live music in the sculpture gardens, and see stars on the screen as works by Baltimore filmmakers are shown. First Thursdays at the BMA offer educational tours and talks, free admissions to all exhibits, light refreshments, a cash bar and more, every month.

Tonight's First Thursday events run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the BMA, Art Museum Drive. All activities and admissions are free. Call 410-396-6320.
