Man is killed when vehicle slams into tree

A Hampstead man was killed yesterday when his four-wheel-drive vehicle ran off Gorsuch Road North in Hampstead and struck a tree, police said.

John R. Anderson, 58, of Hoffman Mill Road was pronounced dead at the scene. State police criminal detectives were called to investigate the death as a possible suicide, authorities said.

"We may never know what the driver intended," said Trooper Darren Wagner.

A witness saw a Ford driven by Anderson speed by a parked truck about 10 a.m., and the car left no skid marks before slamming into the tree, Wagner said.

Anderson had gone to Carroll County General Hospital in Westminster earlier yesterday, police said. Hospital staff told investigators that the man went to the emergency room voluntarily, but fled when treatment was offered.

The investigation is continuing, police said.
