Oops, too late

Because of incorrect information provided by the Culinary Institute of America, I urged readers to enter the school's apple pie recipe contest - after the deadline. My apologies to all who were inconvenienced.

Chance to show off pie-making skills

Bakers alert: Here are two easy-as-pie recipe contests to enter. The Culinary Institute of America is holding its first All-American Apple Pie Recipe Contest. Call 212-704-8232 for more information. If apple pie isn't your specialty, Keebler is having its first Desserts Made as Easy as Pie Recipe Contest. (Those desserts are pie, of course.) For entry form and rules, write to Desserts Made as Easy as Pie Recipe Contest, 303 E. Wacker Drive, Suite 440, Chicago, Ill. 60601.

Rules of thumb for serving sizes

Trying to watch your weight and having trouble figuring out portion sizes? These guidelines should help:

* 3 ounces of meat or fish is the same size as a deck of cards.

* 1 cup of potato, pasta or rice: a tennis ball.

* 1 ounce of cheese: your thumb.

* 1 medium fruit: your fist.
