Cardinals: Mark McGwire has yet to hit a homer in the second inning this season. St. Louis has been shut out twice this season, the lowest total in the major leagues.

Cubs: Kerry Wood set the team's 20th century rookie record for strikeouts when he fanned Brett Tomko in the second inning. Wood's 226th strikeout moved him past Tom Hughes, who fanned 225 in 1901. The Cubs' overall rookie record is 268 set by Larry Corcoran in 1880. Wood is the first Cubs pitcher to homer twice in the same season since Dennis Eckersley in 1986. Wood has nine double-digit strikeout games in 26 major-league starts.

Reds: Cincinnati lost for the second time in 10 games.
