Andrea Kraus won the medal for a second successive year and Connie Pifer won a sudden-death playoff with a par on the fourth extra hole to get the final place as U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur sectional qualifying was held yesterday at Hartefeld National Golf Club in Avondale, Pa.

Kraus, from Pikesville and Woodholme Country Club, posted a 2-over-par 73 to lead the 31-player field (five qualifiers) by three strokes over the hilly 5,922-yard southeastern Pennsylvania course. Pifer, reigning club champion at Hunt Valley GC, shot 78, then went on to eliminate Alicia Kapheim, of Hopewell N.J., in their overtime session.

The championship will be held Oct. 3-8 at Champions Golf Course in Houston.

Headed for her fourth successive Mid-Am championship, Kraus missed only two fairways and hit 13 greens in regulation. Her round included an eight-foot birdie putt at the par-3 sixth, and three back-nine bogeys.

The playoff rotation was Nos. 7-8-9, and after the two had bogeyed the first one and parred the next two, Pifer set up her win with a 165-yard 7-wood shot that finished pin-high, 20 feet right of the cup at the 333-yard seventh. Kapheim, a qualifier in this event last year, reached only the front edge of the green, and three-putted from 60 feet for bogey.
