Indians: Placed P Tom Martin (strained right groin) on 15-day DL. Purchased contract of C Einar Diaz from Triple-A Buffalo. Transferred P John Smiley from 15-day to 60-day DL. Purchased contract of IF Ricky Gutierrez (left knee injury) from Double-A Akron; placed him on 60-day DL.

Marlins: Announced that they will call up OF Preston Wilson today.

Red Sox: Transferred IF Lou Merloni from 15-day to 60-day DL. Released 1B-OF Orlando Merced. Announced that they will purchase contract of P David West and recall C Mandy Romero from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Rockies: Recalled IF Jason Bates from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Tigers: Extended player-development agreement with Single-A West Michigan through 2002.

White Sox: Purchased contract of IF Craig Wilson from Triple-A Calgary. Acquired OF Corey Jenkins from Red Sox for IF Chris Snopek.


WNBA: Signed former U.S. Olympic G Dawn Staley, who had been with ABL's Philadelphia Rage, to multiyear contract.

Detroit (WNBA): Assistant coach Sonny Allen retired.


Pacific-10: Agreed to send second-place team to Holiday Bowl for next four years.

Kent: Signed women's basketball coach Bob Lindsay to five-year contract extension through 2003.


Coyotes: Re-signed free-agent D Michel Petit to one-year contract with option.
