September 01, 1998

Westminster Police Department has been awarded a nearly $75,000 federal grant to enhance its community policing efforts, Democratic U.S. Sens. Barbara A. Mikulski and Paul S. Sarbanes announced yesterday.

The grant was made available through the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and provides 75 percent of salary and benefits for each officer hired for three years, up to a maximum of $75,000 per officer.

Mikulski is a member of the Commerce, State and Justice Subcommittee on Appropriations, which funds the COPS program.
