BALTIMORE -- Making schools safer will be the topic of a conference planned for Sept. 25 and 26 at the Baltimore Convention Center.

The event, "Safe Schools -- A Shared Responsibility Shaping the Future," is being sponsored by the Maryland State Department of Education, the lieutenant governor's office, and the Maryland State Teachers Association.

The conference, which will provide information on programs to encourage good student behavior and reduce student disruptions, is open to the public. Information: 410-767-0292 or 410-767-0311.

WESTMINSTER -- The Literacy Council of Carroll County has scheduled an orientation session and workshops for new reading tutors at its offices at 95 Carroll St. in Westminster.

Prospective tutors must attend an orientation meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 24, and workshops from 9 a.m. to 3: 30 p.m. Sept. 26, and 6: 30 p.m. to 9: 30 p.m. Sept. 28 and Oct. 1.

Volunteers with the Literacy Council of Carroll County provide free one-on-one tutoring to adults learning to read. Information: 410-848-6506 from 9: 30 a.m. to 12: 30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
