Sequoia Software of Columbia announced yesterday that it is opening a European sales office in Dublin, Ireland.

The office will be staffed by about five people, including Chris McCarthy, newly named vice president of European operations, and some sales and technical support staff members, said Jeff Mason, Sequoia's director of sales.

Sequoia's main product is Interchange98, software that manages the storage and access of medical records.

In the United States, Sequoia markets to other software companies, which embed Interchange98 in their own software packages, and to users such as health maintenance organizations which develop their own information systems.

With a small staff in Europe, Mason said, the focus will not be on users but on companies that can use Interchange98 in software they sell. He said Sequoia is already working with two Belgian companies and a Finnish manufacturer of anesthesia monitoring equipment.

McCarthy has worked with several companies marketing health software in Europe.
