Red Sox: Mike Stanley's 27 homers this season are a career high. His previous high was 26, set in 1993 with the Yankees. Boston missed its chance to win nine games against Kansas City for the first time since 1969. The Red Sox went 10-2 against the expansion Royals that year.

Royals: Second baseman Jose Offerman made over-the-shoulder catches in the second and fifth innings to steal hits from the Red Sox. Jeff Conine singled in the third inning, his first hit since returning Wednesday from the disabled list. Conine, sidelined with back soreness on July 26, was also hitless in two rehab games with Triple-A Omaha.
