Indians: Purchased contract of IF Torey Lovullo from Triple-A Buffalo. Designated former Orioles IF Jeff Manto for assignment.

Pirates: Agreed to terms with P Jason Christiansen on two-year contract.

Rockies: Acquired P Jason Brester from Giants to complete earlier trade involving Ellis Burks and Darryl Hamilton, and assigned him to Double-A New Haven.

Tigers: Recalled OF Juan Encarnacion from Triple-A Toledo. Optioned OF Trey Beamon to Toledo.

Albany-Colonie (Independent): Signed OF Francisco Cabrera.

Round Rock (Double-A): Nolan Ryan-owned franchise, which will begin play in Texas in 2000, will be called Express; team currently plays in Jackson, Miss.

College

Fairfield: Named Jerry Hobbie and Matt Roe (Maryland) men's assistant basketball coaches.

UMES: Named William Abadie women's volleyball coach.

Navy: Named Kirk Woolfolk director of strength and conditioning and Steve Murdock strength and conditioning coach for Olympic sports.

North Carolina: SS Brian Roberts, 1998 NCAA leader in steals and ACC Player of the Year, will transfer to South Carolina.

Football

Cardinals: Released FB Ron Janes, P Marcus Williams, DE Terry Wilkerson and DL Desmond Byrd.

Chargers: Signed CB Nate Odomes to one-year deal. Released LB Bart Conley.

Eagles: Placed DL Mike Mamula (torn anterior cruciate ligament) on IR.
