Devil Rays: Paul Sorrento was 6-for-59 (.102) in his previous 19 games before his single in the second inning. Catcher John Flaherty's second-inning single put his average above .200 for the first time since April 23.

Indians: Manager Mike Hargrove said in a Fox TV interview that he is negotiating a one-year contract extension. Team spokesman Bart Swain would not confirm whether the deal was done. Hargrove signed a two-year deal with a club option for 2000 last year. The extension is believed to make 2000 guaranteed with a club option for 2001. David Justice, batting .236 in the second half, got a day off against the left-handed starter.

Yankees: New York has held a lead in every game since June 28 against the Mets and is 36-10 in that span. Not counting the strike-shortened 1994 season, the team is within a game of the first season sweep of an opponent in its 96-season history. It was 9-0 against Cleveland four years ago.
