Realtors invite public to candidate forum

The Carroll County Association of Realtors is sponsoring a candidates' forum from 6 p.m. to 9: 30 p.m. Thursday at the Westminster Senior Center.

The public is invited to hear the candidates for state Senate and House of Delegates at 6 p.m. and candidates for county commissioner at 7: 30 p.m.

Light refreshments will be served.

The senior center is at 125 Stoner Ave.

Gullo, Pecoraro chosen for Legislative Committee

The Maryland Municipal League has chosen two Carroll County men to serve on its Legislative Committee for a one-year term.

New Windsor Mayor Jack A. Gullo Jr. and Westminster Councilman L. Gregory Pecoraro were named to the committee by league President Andrew C. Hanko.

The league represents city and town governments throughout the state. The Legislative Committee directs league actions during the General Assembly each year.

The committee also begins meeting this month to develop a priority legislative program for introduction at the start of the General Assembly.

Carroll receives $803,626 in entertainment tax funds

Carroll County received $803,626 from the state for entertainment taxes during fiscal 1998, which ended June 30.

The figure was up from $715,603 for fiscal 1997, keeping pace with the state trend of a 10.5 percent increase in entertainment spending.

Statewide, spending on athletic events was up 23 percent; movies, 4.6 percent; live theater and concerts, 25 percent; golf courses, 24 percent; amusement parks, 26 percent; and winter skating rentals, 36 percent.

The state returns a portion of entertainment taxes it collects to the counties on a quarterly basis.

County roads bureau lists construction projects

The Carroll County Bureau of Roads Operations has announced roadwork this week around the county.

Deep milling and patching: Freedom Avenue from Route 32 to the cul-de-sac; Smith Avenue from Route 32 to the Ag Center entrance.

Road reconstruction: French Avenue off Streaker Road.

Patching: Oak Hill Drive from Locust Lane to the cul-de-sac.

Shoulder work: Leppo Road from Geeting Road to Old Hanover Road; Barnhart Road from Old Hanover Road to Geeting Road; Gross Mill Road from Fairmount Road to Dave Rill Road; Conover Road from Harney Road to the Pennsylvania line.

Ditch work: Keysville Road from Route 194 to Keysville-Bruceville Road; Blacks Schoolhouse Road from Stone Road North to Babylon Road.

Ditchline and shoulder work: Old Hanover Road from the Pennsylvania line to Barnhart Road.

Blacktop wedge and leveling: Runkles Road from Watersville Road West to Gillis Falls Road.

Blacktop surfacing: Carroll Street, Hampstead, from Houcksville Road to Shiloh Avenue.

Slurry surfacing (a topping treatment): Murray Road from Old Westminster Pike to the end; Gross Mill Road from Dave Rill Road to Upper Beckleysville Road; Carroll Warehime Road from Schalk Road No. 1 to Brodbecks Road.

Paving: Marriottsville Road No. 2 from Sunset Drive to Marriottsville.

Pipe work: Snydersburg Road from Route 27 to Route 482; Sullivan Road from Beggs Road and Lemmon Road; Warehime Road from Maple Grove Road to Millers Station Road, with road closure Wednesday.
