Two local accounting firms, trying to stand their ground while huge conglomerates buy up smaller companies around them, are pooling their resources to keep their share of the market.
Alex S. Levin of Baltimore's Levin, Zwagil & Block, P.A., and staff will join Naden/Lean, LLC, of Lutherville, on Sept. 1. The combined firm, which will have 50 employees, will move to larger offices in Timonium in mid-October.
Darryl A. Bodnar, the managing member of Naden/Lean, said he's not interested in joining one of the giants, such as American Express Tax and Business Services Inc., which last year purchased Walpert, Smullian & Blumenthal, one of Baltimore's largest public accounting and consulting firms.
"Though what is very important is that we be able to compete effectively by building an organization that has strong enough depth and has the ability to offer a wide array of services," he said.
Levin will be one of six owners at Naden/Lean. Steven Zwagil left the firm two years ago, Levin said, and Richard Block will be a partner at Weil Akman Baylin & Coleman, P.A., in Timonium.
