However, this time the Orioles' offensive support lagged. It had offered Mussina 43 runs in his last five starts, but couldn't get a read on Serafini, who effectively ran fastballs beneath the hands of a heat-seeking lineup.

With the Orioles trailing 1-0, Alomar finally broke through against the rookie Serafini in the fifth when he homered to right field. In his last start, Serafini had managed only six outs against the Kansas City Royals. The Orioles scratched him for seven hits in six innings and brought more than four hitters to the plate in only one inning.

"Give him credit. He did a good job of putting the ball where he wanted to," Hoiles said. "He didn't leave a lot over the plate. We didn't know that much about him and he didn't exactly give us a lot of clues."
