NL: Upheld three-game suspension and $1,000 fine of Dodgers OF Gary Sheffield for fighting and starting bench-clearing brawl during game June 28.

Athletics: Activated OF Jason McDonald from 15-day DL. Optioned P Jay Witasick (C. Milton Wright, UMBC) to Triple-A Edmonton.

Brewers: Named Wendy Selig-Prieb president and CEO. President and CEO Bud Selig resigned and transferred ownership interest into voting trust.

Cubs: Placed P Tony Fossas on waivers for purpose of giving him unconditional release. Recalled SS Jose Nieves from Double-A West Tennessee.

Devil Rays: Placed P Albie Lopez (right heel bursitis) on 15-day DL, retroactive to Aug. 1. Recalled P Dennis Springer from Triple-A Durham.

Marlins: Recalled IF Luis Castillo from Triple-A Charlotte.

Mets: Signed P John Franco to extension through 2000. Activated P Paul Wilson; assigned him to Triple-A Norfolk.

Red Sox: Signed IF Adam Everett, first-round pick. Sent P Jim Corsi to Triple-A Pawtucket on rehabilitation assignment.

Newburgh (Independent): Announced retirement of P Dave Fleming, who pitched earlier this season for Triple-A Rochester.


Franklin & Marshall: Named Dave Webster men's lacrosse coach.

Idaho State: Scot Maynard, son of NFL Hall of Fame WR Don Maynard, resigned after one season as special teams coordinator and assistant secondary coach.
