Eagle-shooting Pifer takes Greiner Cup Burden nips Slebodnik for Wakefield Valley title

Connie Pifer, from Hunt Valley Golf Club, highlighted her round with an eagle-3 at the 400-yard third hole and went on to shoot 37-3673 and capture the annual Greiner Cup at Caves Valley Golf Club yesterday.

Andrea Kraus, a two-time winner, shot 39-3776, and Kristin Dollenberg included three birdies in a par-matching front-nine 36 and also ended with 76. Cindy Peterka, another two-time champion, followed at 78.

Joan Winchester, the current Metropolitan champion, won the Seniors championship with 79.

Wakefield Valley Golf Club pro-invitation: Joe Burden, second-year professional at River Downs GC, birdied the eighth hole (his 17th) and edged Don Slebodnik of Night Hawk Golf Center for the pro sweeps win in Westminster. Burden used three back-nine birdies for 33, then shot the front nine in par 36 for a 69 total. Slebodnik also had three back nine birdies in his 37-3370.

Rick Sovero of Rolling Road GC earned amateur low gross with a 3-under-par 36-3369 that included five birdies, three of them on the back nine.

Junior Interclub: The 13-under team of John Wah and Patrick D'Anthony led off with a 3-0 sweep for the second time in four days, and Wakefield Valley GC went on to edge Hunt Valley GC, 5-4, and retain the Baltimore Junior Interclub championship at the Elkridge Club. Last Friday, Wakefield nipped Rolling Road GC, 5-4, and Hunt Valley stopped Baltimore CC, 9-0, in the semifinals.
