"The Dog Who Bit a Policeman," by Stuart M. Kaminsky. Mysterious Press. 228 pages. $22.

Kaminsky's 12th Moscow police procedural featuring Inspector Porfiry Rostnikov is a worthy addition to the series.

In the new Russia, a mafia member is found floating dead in the Moscow River and others turn up in hotel swimming pools. Rostnikov must track down each mob's leader and try to halt a mafia war.

Rostnikov and his team are dedicated and loyal. All the characters are well-defined and believable.
