A book to help you in buying a house

Anyone planning to purchase a home might want to take a look at the second edition of "How to Buy a House, Condo, or Co-op" by Michael C. Thomsett and the editors of Consumer Reports Books.

The buying process, mortgages, insurance, home improvements and taxes are among the topics covered in the book's six sections. There is also a glossary of real estate terms.

The 236-page book sells for $16.95.

Woodland Walk honored for excellence

Woodland Walk, a 183-unit "town and manor home community" at Piney Orchard, received a first-place award at the 1998 Anne Arundel Excellence in Building ceremony. Porten Cos. Inc., the builder, was honored for having achieved the "highest standards in duplex/back-to-back design and construction" in the competition sponsored by the Anne Arundel Trade Council.

The two-level townhouses and single-story manor home were designed by architects Ray Sobrino & Associates of Rockville. Sixty homes have been sold since the community opened in June 1997.

Woodland Walk also earned a marketing award of merit from the metropolitan Washington Major Achievement in Marketing Excellence competition.
